Who has some extra cash
It really isn't a matter of throwing money at one car to make it faster than another... That's not the determining factor in why this car is priced where it is currently at. That LS-6 Corvette is an important part of Chevrolet history... The LS-6 was the last solid lifter big block that Chevrolet ever installed in a car and in fact came very close to not making 1971 production. It is a very rare and desirable car... You can't recreate that no matter how fast you're car is or how closely you build a car just like it. The value in a car like this is it's place in automotive history.
I guarantee you that I will be driving that LS-6 when it is completed... It's too much fun not to!
As far as the comparison with the housing market... Recent history (1990-1991) in the collector car market would suggest that while prices for these cars may drop slightly (in the range of 10% or so) the bottom won't fall out... Too many people out there that still want to own these cars, regardless of the economic status. As long as there is a demand (and there is a strong demand), the cars will continue to bring close to the money that they are now.
Nice call! That's good money for any LS-6 coupe.

As far as reliability goes I would still much rather take my car with a relatively new engine cross country than a car with an old, untouched "survivor" drivetrain.

Your point is well taken... Some people see value in that historical significance, others do not... There is plenty of room for both goups in this hobby.
My '69 L-89 car, while not a body off restored car by any means, had most of the mechanical areas addressed while I owned it... I don't want to give the impression that it was an untouched original. Like you, I'd be a little aprehensive about driving an original thirty year old car cross country... You just don't know how it was maintained and cared for.
That car's new owner (a forum member) is currently collecting parts to do a body off restoration. I can't wait to see it when he is finished!
