Default A/C box hole and patch I think???

I have been doing a many things to the vette lately and I was cleaning up some wires yesterday when I noticed the A/C box (I think that’s what is called) appears to have a fiberglass patch covering a hole next to the passenger side header. Why would there be a whole there, I can’t think right off why some one would cut into that area? The patch is kinda loose so I need to repair it. I was getting some fumes inside the car so that may be the cause. I was planning on using something like aluminum tape, but would like some suggestions, I don’t really want the shine of the tape though

The hole you found is not uncommon. I had one in my 71 and I've seen them on several others - especially header cars.
Repair with fiberglass and then cover the exterior of the entire evaporator box with Thermo_Tec or similar reflective insulation for better AC performance.

I had a hole in my A/C box too. It was small, linear, and parallel to the ground. It looked like I may have dinged it when I removed the engine.

I fixed it from the inside with fiberglass blanket and resin. Of course, it was much easier to remove the A/C box when the engine was out.

Your idea of tape is fine for a temp fix. How close is it to the heat? Black duct tape might not show as much. If real close, you should use aluminum tape or some other heat resistant product.

What is odd about it all is the car was all stock when I got it with 46,000 miles. I added headers later. On the heat tape where can I get it and does any come in black so not to be so visible, if not I guess it can be painted? The hole is by the # 8 plug about two inches from the header

I have also seen these repaired well with Bondo-Hair, a,
fiberglass reinforced body filler.

So if the engine has never been out why or how would a hole get there?

I have actually seen them burned there from hot exhaust manifolds or headers. Is hole irregular shaped, or like it was cut there? Not much clearance and it get very hot at this spot.

The hole seems to be an odd shape i have yet to pull the patch completely off though. Could the stock manifold burn in a hole like that?
