You're supposed to have the A/C system evacuated by a professional using a refrigerant recovery system. As the previous post said this is to protect the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. Yup. In fact, the EPA can fine you up to $10,000 if you are caught intentionally venting R12 to the atmosphere. I'm not kidding about this!!
Now that being said, it is well known that the schrader valves in the A/C system are a major source of leaks. They look exactly like the air stems on your tires and function exactly the same way. It is also well known that when no one is around, these valves are prone to leak excessively to the point that your system is completly depressurized so that component replacement (or removal) can be accomplished safely without evacuating.
Now, one rarely services his A/C system unless he is having a problem (like a leak) and has found that all of his refrigerant has completely *leaked* from his system. In this case, it is not a crime, nor is it subject to fine.
If a tree falls, and nobody is around to hear it, did it make a noise?.....
In all seriousness I haven't even tried to turn on the AC since my brother had it fixed when he used to drive the car from time to time about 5 years ago. So I immagine that it is most likely empty by now...
I think, if I remember right, that I had to upgrade my system to a newer more environmentally friendly gas when the work was done on it 5 years ago but I'm not really sure if I know what I'm talking about. I might just be on crack or something....
I'll try to play around with this when I get back home on monday.
