Default 68-9 427 435 tach redline

Hey guys

One of the classic car brokers has a 69 vette 427 435 for sale.

It has a redline of 5500. I do belive that is for a 390 and 400 hp

Is this right? I would figure the solid cam would redline higher.

I didnt check under the hood, could see the car did have the f 41 package

5600 is 390 and 400 hp 427 engines.

435 hp is supposed to have a 6500 redline.

you could order the f-41 with the 390h.p. check the rear should have u-bolt caps not u-bolts.check for gas return line,390 had one tri-powers(400,435)did not.also check thickness of frt and rear sway bars ,check wiring harness in left frt fender area for t.i. wiring plug

The next thing to think about is that someone selling a clone will just go and have the tach repainted/replaced.

6500 rpm Corvette tachs on E-Bay go for really big bucks (they did a year ago when I was a fanatic E-bay cruiser.) Maybe the reason is that people who want to build clones want these tachs.

I kept losing bids for 6500 rpm tachs. Finally someone offered an entire drivers panel for sale - it included the tach and speedo. It was red vinyl which I also wanted. When I zoomed on the Ebay photo, it showed at 6500 rpm tach! No one apparently noticed the tach. I bought the whole works for a lot less than what the 6500 rpm tachs alone were bringing! (PS This is a rare success story. I lost a lot of money buying what turned out to be junk from Ebay sellers.)

I just ran out to the garage and check out a few my parts in the tach sector laughs

I plucked 2 tachs from old 68 vettes years again as a kid that had no engines. One I can remenber had the stock hood the other was lucky if it had a hood.

These are both 6500 redline tachs. Did the 6500 tach go with any other engine

I checked that car out again last night

It at least has f51 everything No trans ignition

I went home and checked and noticed that there was only one 435 hp distributer that went in the
car. 1111296

I even checked ebay and found a 435 hp distributer with those nos and it was a points type non trans

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...3ARTQ%3AUS%3A1

I even asked the seller if this was transisterized he said no

As I found out all 435s had transisterized ignitions as were the distributers and all had the 1111296 distributer and a buch of other stuff to go along with the k66 package

HMMM I know these cars were made by humans but what gives ?

The car either has the original engine or it doesn't. If it don't then it really don't matter. Someone could have put anything into anything.
A low tach don't mean it isn't a 435 hp or even a 500 cu.in. Who knows?

You can dissect the car but its easier just finding out if its an original engine

Hey Tony,I can tell you that the f41 package was just an option,I have a documented 69 427/435 hp that does not have the f41 and your right the 390/400 was 5500 redline ,435 was 6500.if the brocker wants the car to sell as a 435 hp car and he is not trying to pull the wool over your eyes, then he would have no objections of pulling the gas tank and seeing if the build sheet is there that states the L71 option , only takes about 1 1/2 hours to pull and install,Darryl

Darryl,

That was a great ideal and he actually wanted to see for himself.

He let his mechanic pull it down as I watched.

well did you ever see a paper that was sitting on metal and wet for almost 40yrs that is what it looked like

clueless did every last 435 have a transisterized k66?

That is the one that throws me the most

He allowed me to see the head dates at my request ...a2268 and let me check out the rear while the tank was down it said 2az57 68w hd BB Couldnt see the block as it was on the side

the trans is not original as it is a 400..... got me

K-66 Transistorized ignition was a mandatory option on ALL solid-lifter BB's in 68 and 69....

If it is not there, and originally was, someone removed it. Look for 3 holes in a triangular pattern, on the left fenderwell where the bumper extension comes thru. The TI module would have been mounted there.

see the engine options in this list:

http://www.idavette.net/facts/69.htm

the 400(L-68) and 435 hp(L-71) engines had the tripower intake = 3 holley carbs.

the 430 hp engine = L-88 = one holley 4-barrel carb.

Hey Tony ,the 435 hp is a tripower, and is the L71 option,If the build sheet was readable it would say in the option no. catigory 02L71AA,meaning 427-cd 435 hp v8,the option only cost 437.10 over base model cost!also when you saw the dates on the heads, did you get the casting #,this would tell you if they were oval or rec port heads, and would help determine the motor hp if they are ori.

yeah

they are big ports 840

here are the dates

jan 3 68
jan 22 68

3919840

The block is 3935439 I couldnt see the date as it is on the side and a bit rough the block has all the correct nos on the pad and straaight as an arrow for the for both codes

they are big ports 840

the car is an april car acording to its vin

from what I can see there is no sign of the amp for the ti dist

i do see a 3 hole alignmen twhere i guess it could have went

there is no restister either I researched that and that was in 69

Is there a difference on the gas tank do they all look the same

I also read that the 435 has a bigger balancer and a silver cad pully on the alternater

is all this info right were do we stand

Hey Tony the heads are a full year off and are not ori. to the car if the car was built in april of 69, unless you have mistaken the 68 for 69 witch is VERY easy to do,the block on the other hand #3935439 was produced late 68 and early 69 and is a 427 and would be considered correct for the car ,need to know if its a 2bolt or 4 bolt, witch would help you determine what hp the block was rated,? ori.broch marks on the front pad?what are the # on the pad?no diff. in the gas tanks,I believe it should have a bigger balancer, 8 "?

yeah the car is an 8 my bad

I noticed it was an april car too and the heads are january which fall into place

I dont know if that guy will let me take the engine apart though laughs

I guess that is the last thing to know but then again I remember years ago when I

I used to do engines for a machine shop we would get a lot of blocks that were 4 bolt that were used in a 390 400 and so on with the 454 s also It seemed if they didnt have a 2 bolt they used a 4 bolt
the blocks are the same even the casting nos the only difference is the webs having a 4 bolt config and using the 4 bolt caps Christ you can swap a set from an old 366 truck engine and make a for bolt as we used to send any 366 core to the smelter and keep the 427/396 crank ,rods and main caps the oil pans also made great marine pans with their 7qt capacity

Im still bafffed about the ti though

and to further what I was saying

the norm is inside 6 months

do you know how many times a set of heads came in that were a full year apart

a lot

I would say at least 1 in 12

Like I said this was years ago in the early 80s when most people still didnt care about numbers
