Default 68 - 71 VIN question

I have been trying to find a resource online that will help me decode VINs from early C3's. I found been able to find this site which describes 72's and up.

I tried searching the forums, google, yahoo, and lycos. No luck. There was some C3 vette registry website that seemed like it would help, but you had to pay to be a member before it would decode VIN's.

Any help that anyone could give would be great. An example breakdown and a table of codes would be OUTSTANDING. Thanks again for the help.

Ben

What exactly do you need help with. There are a lot of experts here at the board who can help. You can also get a fact book for the year you are looking for. Also, I just got a catalog from year one and there is vette info at the beginning of the catalog that might help.

1968: First symbol (1) indicates Chevrolet. 2nd and 3rd (94=Corvette). 4th and 5th indicate body style (67=vert, 37=coupe)6th indicates model year (8=1968) 7th = assembly plant (S=St Louis) last six are sequential production numer.

1969: Exactly the same as 1968 except 6th symbol will be a 9 for 1969

1970: 1st is 1 for Chevrolet. 2nd will be a 9 for Corvette, 3rd will indicate type of engine with even number like 4 indicating V-8 engine. 4th and 5th indicate body style (67=vert, 37=coupe) 6th model year (0), 7th assembly plant (S=St Louis) and last 6 again sequential production number)

1971 - Exactly the same as 1970 except 6th symbol will be a 1 for 1971.

This is a great resource for option codes, VIN decoding and production figures for just about every year.

Default Thanks for the help...

Thanks everyone for the really fast turn around. I've got this thread saved, so I can refer to it later.

The VIN I was trying to verify was:

194379S725451, which fits with a '69 coupe.

Would anyone care to give an opinion on this vehicle ?

I'm now after a (matching) '68 or '69 coupe with A/C and P/S, and a manual tranny. Color isn't that great of a concern to me, but I would rather have the internior tan or black (even if it is redone). This car fits the bill except for the no A/C.

I live in New Orleans and the heat index is 113 today... yeah, I really do want it even it isn't all that great.

Thanks for all of the help.

Sincerely,
Ben

you need to find out what doesn't work, gages, wipers, condition of birdcages, other rust spots etc. Other wise looks sweet!
