Daytona Headlight Buckets
I picked up a set new Daytona Style Headlight Covers last weekend from CorvetteMick. He has the original set that the reproductions now being sold were molded from.
I also borrowed his original '68 aluminum headlight buckets to use for a pattern so I could have a set cut and bent up. I have a friend with a CNC Plasma Cutting Table that is a sheet metal engineer. He is going to take the dimensions and create a print then load it into his program to cut out as many as I need.
The original buckets are aluminum and are heliarc welded in one corner. I plan on making Mick a set of those, but the rest I will have cut and bent from 20 gauge painted steel with an extra flange to pop rivet the area that needs to be joined instead of welding. The thing about the CNC table is that it even cuts the screw/bolt holes in the proper location and creates a smooth edge as it cuts all of the needed angles. Then throw them in the brake and bend them up.These should be correct in every dimension to Mick’s original aluminum set.
I plan on taking the lexan covers to a vacuum former to see what they will charge to make me a set of the Daytona style lexan covers also.
I like this headlight set up and think it will look great on my new project ’80. It sure is a lot lighter in weight.
Now where were those Angle Eye Lights? jim
PS, My complete headlight system from my 85K '80. It's all coming out. jim

How soon will you be doing this? I finished my buckets and was going to attempt my own vacuum-forming soon, maybe I'll wait and see what he charges you.

Why? are you interested in buying my '80 headlights? They are on an 85,000 mile car that has been stored since 1987. I wonder if their inactivity will affect the vacuum component's? I plan on removing the complete system and selling it all together or by the part.
I found the angle eyes on e-bay to use in my new system. Any suggestions on what I should look for to use as the low beam, just use a stock capsule and light or is their something better? I'd like to use a replacement bulb style capsule. Any ideas on a donor or availability for it?
OK Len, I will go back and remove the '80 headlights for sale. jim
Jim...I would just post the original 80's headlights in the correct C3 Parts for sale forum. As far as the "Daytona" headlights...well...it just appears close in context to a thread that was shut down not long ago and several people didn't understand it until the mods explained the "rulz" as Jughead put it. Don't take it personal. I assure you, it's not you or your 80's original headlights, you can sell them in the "for sale" forum...but the principle.
Stay with the project you are doing for your car and your car only
and keep us posted with project and pics!
This forum is a great source and tool. Just because I "done wrong" a while back and got "smacked down" doesn't mean I'm gonna boycott it and not interact with some great people!
