i had car off and then put it in reverse to make sure the emergency brake failure doesnt send it down the hill. I try to restart the car and the ignition wont budge from lock position. I have cable for reverse lockout installed and I cant get it to release the ignition from there either. any way to bypass this lock and start the car? thanks! Dave
also besides really tugging on the wheel, have someone rock the car a little. It sounds like you just have to much pressure on the ignition lock. I hope we are diagnosing your prob correctly. Also, if the key want (SOuthern priviledge, I get to use want), the operating rod on top of the column may be bound. Make sure it is running straight up and down the column (on top)
Wiggle the wheel some. If that doesn't work then you can manually unlock the steering by removing the cotter pin from the column lever and move the column lever by hand. The lever is located right on the steering column close to the firewall just below the master cylinder.
The lever is the attaching point for the interlock cable so once you remove the cotter pin and slip the cable off of the lever pin the lever should be free to move.
You probably put the cable in a bind. Sometimes you can simply straighten it and you're good to go. Sometimes you kink it and, if so, you may need to remove it to straighten or replace it.
thanks everyone. Big G fixed me up on the tech thread(realized it wasnt really tech so I made one here too,sorry-was in a "bind" lol)
the cable had bent at the tranny for the reverse lockout. i will never again put it in gear without the key in the ignition and it unlocked.
