Default Choppy wipers?

Saturday morning and evening it rained at Carlisle. Sunday morning it rained prety much all the way back to Connecticut. My '78 had its wipers skip so much across my windshield that they locked together several times. I cleaned and scraped with a straight edge razor the windshield, replaced the wipers, Even went so far as to 'Rain-X' the windshield as to drive home in the rain without them. It was pretty much nerve wracking to say the least, especially since Rain-X doesn't work well in misty conditions, which we had! Ha anyone encountered this problem before and how did you rectify it?
BTW, my linkage is free and doesn't bind, and the wiper motor is new This problem was there before I replaced it and has been getting gradually worse. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Mike

I'm waiting to hear too; mine do the same thing with a new windshield.

They don't do it at highway speeds, could it be the springs in the arms are getting weak?

It could be a dirty windshield.
An old old trick is to use dry news paper and polish the glass. This will remove most anything normally left by glass cleaner.
This is also how I removed Rain X when I found it to be a pain for me.

Speaking of Carlisle, tip of the month

http://www.carswap.com/restoration/tip.asp

Here's a c&p of the article:

Chattering Windshield Wipers Sure are Annoying!

Windshield wipers chatter and skip even though they are new? The reason is that your windshield is dirty! Yeah, we know you cleaned it with Windex after washing the car, but it's still dirty with an invisible film of road salts and oils. This film must be scrubbed off. The best thing to accomplish this task is Bon Ami cleanser, still found in its original 1940s-style can in the supermarket. Wet down the windshield, liberally sprinkle the powder and scrub with a soft-bristle brush (you know, the kind your Grandmother used to scrub the kitchen floor with). Rinse thoroughly and dry off with paper towels. You can clean older wiper blades the same way too, since the films accumulate on them as well.

Tip for this tip: Do this before washing the car to avoid mess.

2nd Tip for this tip: Don't (repeat: DON'T), use Ajax or Comet or any other chlorinated or pumice-containing cleanser. If you do, you're going to have to learn how to re-polish the windshield glass. We'll be doing an article on how to do that, but that's later…

Visit SecondChanceGarage.com. They will show you how to take it apart, restore it, get it back together and have fun doing it. Written by those who have done it for those who are doing it!
