The French symbol left the emblem in 1982 leaving only the chevy logo and checkered flag. The checkered flag then got reversed to the left side in 1984 and newer. The insignia left the emblem in 1982 cause...the French Suck? Nuff said?
IF the Fleur de Lis left the Corvette emblem in 82 then why does the C5 emblem have the Fleur de lis?
I think you will find it on later Vettes.......
notice that on the C3 the flags are reversed from what they are on a, say C5...what year did they change, and why? They answer my friend is blowing in the wind...
Chevy has regularly changed the Corvette emblems & wanted to change the new car so that it could be identified as new at the time. This is the primary reason for emblem changes. It is a low volume car & changing the emblems is easy. Flag colors black & white reversed for example in 56, 65, 75-76 & 82. Also the no. of black & white has changed 80-81 for example. Flag side was switched in 84. C4 was obviously new & a new more modern emblem was done.
ok thread over, you want to know why they used the fleur de lis, its because they decided it was better way to represent the french heritage of the chevrolet brothers than to just have a white flag and a checkered flag <---- french guy

I always thought those little white dots on the ends of his arms were his hands, but with this knowledge now, I can only assume they are some form of pastry.
The Chevrolet brothers were Swiss, not French. Also the Fleur de lis WAS a symbol of french royalty, but is more famous as the symbol used by the french after the revolution to brand a woman (on the shoulder) convicted of adultery. They used it precisely because it had been associated with the king and used it as an insult to the royal family.
I find it appropriate considering how fickle and flighty (and often untrustworthy) our beloved vettes can be...
Originally Chevy had the American Flag in logo, but it is against US law to use the American flag in a sold product, so it was changed.
Which I mentioned about 20 posts ago. As far as I know, that law has since been repealed, or only applies to corporate logos - look at the number of products that have American flags now.
Fickle and untrustworthy...sounds like my '77. Who needs to get married? We have Corvettes!
