Default California front clip

I have a 1971 Vette that I ought within the last year. The man I bought it from owned it since 1973. He said he sent it off to California and had a custom front clip put on. Instead of the pop up headlights, It is open headlights and they are stacked back on one another and then enclosed in a glass material. The guy said that when he finally got it back from California he was supposed to enter it in Bloomington Gold, but got scared someone would see it and steal it. I know I know it makes no sense but can someone tell me was this a common thing done around 1973 or what?

It is a very common thing to do (or was) right after a front end crash when you look at the replacement cost for all that headlight stuff!!

The car still has all the vaccumm and lights underneath it so I would say it was not wrecked. He litterally shipped from Chicago to California to do it. You can easily convert it back without having to buy everything. It is all still there

I think they were called "Daytona" lights, from the late 60's to early 70's era....They give much better lighting than the popular "In the bucket"mods.

Major front-end body work required to "convert it back". However, it's kinda cool in a Citroen sort of way.

P.S.- What's with the "lips" in the center grille? Has the rear-end been chopped?

Never seen that type of headlght treatment before so it probably isn't common. If you have all of the original headlight hardware still in the car it would be worth restoring it to the original configruation. If not I'll give you $200 for the car.
