Default Stupid Ignition Setup Questions

Ok, first off, i accept the fact that im an idiot and these are stupid questions. Im redoing a 75. Its going to have a brand new base zz502 crate. Im definatly going with the Edelbrock Efi system. What should i do about the ignition? I want something totally electronic and controllable. I dont know much about these motors. I know a lot about newer import motors and such. Is there such a thing as a distributerless ignition setup? Can you guys help me out and maybe suggest all the parts i need. I dont need anything super fancy but something that will work with my setup.

Thanks guys.

It looks like Edelbrock kits come with the ignition included. Maybe that's just what you need, although it's not distributorless.

Edelbrock

The newer Vette engines like the LS1, LS2, LS6 are distributorless (DIS). GM sells them as crate motors, but they're small blocks - nothing as big as the 502. DIS systems are more complex and require special pieces for fitting on an engine like the 502. Many aftermarket ignition systems will work with DIS, but you'll need some extra parts to send the system a signal to tell it about the cam position since the stock type distributor doesn't know about it. MSD makes a lot of these parts. You'll also need a coil for each cylinder.

MSD

Here's a 502 equipped with the Edelbrock efi already installed.

You'll also need to upgrade the fuel system to a high pressure system for efi. Usually this means a new electric fuel pump, regulator and new lines including a return system. There are a ton of fuel pumps and regulators out there.

'75s come with an electric tach, so you're in good shape there.

Last but not least, you'll need a place in the exhaust system to install the 02 sensor.

Good luck -

Thanks for the reply. Ill probably just go with a distributer setup then. I know about the fuel system. The pump that comes in the kit looks really small. Thanks for your help.

If you can get the flowrate of the pump (lb. per hour or gal per hour, etc.), you can calculate how much hp it will supply. Or, if you know the hp you want to make, you can calculate what size pump you need. Here's a site that shows calcs for fuel injectors and comes up with the flow rate. Your pump needs to be at least that big. Most pumps are rated at about 43-45 psi.

Ford EDIS. The http://www.megasquirt.info/index.html site mentions it under mega squirt II on the left column.

If your EFI don't have it but supports it seems a cheap and simple system to add.

MSD sells a new Pro-Billet with electronic dials in the distributor rather than the springs and weights. Of course it came out Immediately after I purchased mine!
