Solid lifter valve lash?

Solid lifter valve lash?
How do you know when the lash is out? Any symptoms that they need adjusted? Or do you just check it every couple thousand miles?

mostly you can tell by the sound of the engine clatter. as the lash starts to get bigger, the rockers make more noise. i have been running poly locks on my solid lifter lt-1 so i don't have to adjust them so often.

the so-called lock nuts supplied by gm or over the counter repacements, will back off during use. the poly locks have a set screw to lock down on top of the stud, keeping the adjustment nut from backing off..

i put arp studs in my heads this past spring, put on my rocker arms and poly locks, and adjusted my valves. would not adjust, poly locks were bottoming out before lash was met. then the valve covers would not go back on and tighten down, they were hitting on top of the poly's.
called summit and arp, no help.
the problem: arp studs are .100 longer than the gm lt-1 studs, and the lt-1 studs are discontinued from gm. so i was stuck with the arp's and had to use the 'lock nuts' supplied with the new rocker arms to get my lifters adjusted and the valve covers tightened down without double gasketing the valve covers.
now with about 200 miles on the lock nuts, my valves are in a dire need of adjusting. with the poly's, i could go for a couple thousand miles before adjusting.
the solution: gm parts failed to inform me that the studs used on the aluminum headed c4 l-98 and lt1's are the same as the original lt-1's. i have a couple of sets here, so now i just need the time to put them in along with my poly locks and re-adjust.

A stud girdle helps lock the nut, as a matter of fact if you are running a stud girdle and and the rocker nut loosens off you got serious problems.
A new solid cam should be checked after about 500miles and then you can check it every now and then to see how well it is holding a lash, after everything is broken/worn in you can get 10,000 miles or more without adjusting them. But when new, keep an eye on it

I didn't have that happen but I did have a stud snap and due to the stud girdle, it keep me from having more serious problems. On that note, I also learned not to cinch down (meaning seriously tighten) the poly lock after the lash is set, cinch down the girdle and let that keep things tight. Both Lunati and Reher Morrison said if you cinch down the poly's and tighten the girdle it will stress the stud and cuase it to fail prematurely.
