Looks like you may be on the verge of a nice discovery. Just about 3 bolts and the whole carrier will be on the floor. Get an inspection mirror and see if you can spot the tank sticker. That would be cool.
One sure way to tell is if the tire still has the original sticker labels stuck to the tread. If it does, be real carefull with them so as not to damage My old 76 parts car had the original unused spare in it. Not much demand for a 76 original spare
I was just thinking that it's ironic that it's a nice surprise to find an original, unmolested spare but an unpleasant surprise to find the original, unmolested fuel lines.
The spare on my 78 has never been dropped either, and this is supposedly one of the more rare yellow rim. I did see one for sale at a swap meet this summer asking price $300.
My '80 spare is probably original unmounted. It still has the rubber nubbies. I can see my tank sticker hanging from the front of the tank. Never bothered to drop the tank and look at it but it is definately there waving in the breeze. Maybe one of these days I will drop the spare and check the air pressure. Getting the tank sticker seems like more trouble than it is worth.
...my '75's Firestone 500(like yours) started to bulge & seperate and I had to yank it out of the tub. These tires were recalled and damaged many a Corvette fiberglass fender back in the day...
I WOULD NOT EVER ACTUALLY USE IT ON YOUR CAR UNLESS YOU GOT GOOD INSURANCE.
i'm new to the corvette thing... would someone mind explaining why this was such a nice surprise? TIA!
Well...since Corvette's were the choice cars of drug dealers in the 70's ~ 80's, we typically find the spare tire carrier's packed with forgotten stashes of cocaine or marijuana (four kilos in mine...).
Finding an actual tire in there is a nice surprise!
