Default Differential Question

The front half of my differential on my 71 BB is orange and the rear cover is as cast.

The question that I have, is this the original color combination?

Is there a good resource for these types of issues with pictures and such, in other words, what do people do for correct restorations?

I am not planning any majorwork right now but if I take something apart, I want to make sure it goes back the way the factory intended it. The typical service manuals are not so good at this.

I have the factory assemly manual but certain things don't seem to be detailed enough especially from assemblies that they recieved complete.

Thanks!

Both pieces should be natural color.

Mabey the cover was changed to accomadate a different rear leaf spring. There are 2 1/8th and 2 1/2 inch width springs. I'm in the middle of doing a swap on mine and thats why I know. My 7 leaf (stiffer) is 2 1/8 and my 9 leaf (standard)is 2 1/2.
