I am really pondering about the camaro/firebird seatbelt conversion. I want to save money but not if this looks too bad.Anyone who has done the seatbelt conversion can you give me some info on it.easy conversion? anything you ran into that I should know about to help me out.
Here are some pics of the installation in a 71 vert. I am planning on getting them rewebbed in Royal Blue this winter.
Just installed them a few weeks ago.
The hardest part for me was drilling the hole for the retractor. In a coupe, there is very little room for a drill, even a right angle one. I ended up using a right angle die grinder, and a step drill bit. I turned down the air pressure so the grinder wasn't spinning too fast, and the step bit worked great. Other than that, you just need to take your time removing the carpet (or drill though it and hope you hit the bracket) and putting the carpet back. I still have to do this. However, having the new belts makes me feel a lot better driving the car. Slamming into the steering wheel is not my idea of fun.
I did screw up when I bought mine off of e-bay. I got the rear seat belts out of a convertible by accident. I didn't read the auction description fully before I bid and since I was the only one that bid I bought them. I made them work but had to fab-up some brackets. The reason why I jumped on these belts was they were the proper color and I've been looking for tan for a few months. The most popular colors it seems is grey and black.
Make sure if you search on ebay to search for camaro, firebird, and trans-am, all seperately. Mine were listed under Trans-Am so I got them very cheap, like $20 for all 4 seats.
They go right in. I have 81 seats in my Vert and the buckles can be a bit tricky to get to. I may pull the seats again and stiffen the strap to the buckle somehow. But, all in all a great swap.
