Lots of people here have made the switch and I have not read any that did not rave about it. I just put the steeroids system in my vette but I am waiting for a 5 speed transmission change before I get the car back. Look through the forum and you will see some feedback on the system.
I just ordered the steeroids kit to convert my steering to rack and pinion.
Has anyone done this upgrade? Is the improvement worth the cost?
TIA,
Mike
hmmm It's a little late to be asking that isn't it?? LOL
I've had it for two or three years now and I love it. Just keep an eye on it, the parts aren't what I would call OEM quality. I have had one of the brackets crack, and the set screws came loose on one of the u-joints. I now drown the set screws in lock-tite. Speed Direct promptly sent me a new bracket free of charge.
Be sure to do a search on Steeroids on the forum, also search the archives, you'll find hours of reading material.
For me it was worth the cost because I need to replace almost every part on the stock system.
I installed it, and love it. No more wandering around the road, now it is nice and strait. As it turned out, removal of old system was harder than the installation. I removed old system as one whole piece, so I had to undo clutch linkage and slide steering box back and drop down. I also had issues with my 255/60/15's rubbing on the wheel well after installation on Steeroid rack and pinion, so I had to swap out for 225/70/15's. Recommend dousing all bolts and set screws with loctite to stop them from working loose. Good luck with the installation, let us know how it turns out...
Have the R&P installed in my 1980 for about a year. I found that my turning radius was increased, and it was really hard to get a tight spot out of the wheel, but Speed Direct's tech guy gave me the solution, had to buy a big crowbar to move the column closer to the valve covers. Works ok with vette brakes fiberglass front spring and lower control arm. The brackets are a litte flimsy, I can see why they might eventually break due to the flexing.

Have the R&P in my 80, for about 18 months, increased my turning radius, and had a hard time getting a tight spot out of the steering wheel, but finally got it smoothed out with help from the Speed Direct tech and a big crowbar to move the column in toward the valve cover as far as possible. The support bracket is a little flimsy, you can see it flex when you turn lock to lock on the alignment rack, but hasn't broken yet.
