Im going to spray my frame with por15. It has been sandblasted and I believe ready to go. The por15 is going to need to be thinned though in order for my gun to be able to spray it. What do you guys use to thin it, and how much can it be thinned? I know por recommends their own thinner, but I dont feel like ordering it and waiting for it to arrive. I am hoping it is the same thing as paint thinner or something. Thanks for the help.
If it were mine I would use their solvent. I mean, it's not easy to redo a frame if it starts to peel off in a couple of years. I'm not saying that would happen, but why risk it? If you have already gone to the trouble of ordering the good stuff, why stop short of doing the best job you possibly can?
My advice? Go ahead and use their stuff.
But, if you decide not to, you could use a solvent that is appropriate to use with urethane paints, by the way POR-15 behaves I believe it must be urethane based. Good luck.
Definitely use their stuff!!! Ask me how I know. If the paint reacts and bubbles on you your'e going to have one heck of a time getting it off. Be patient and get the result you are looking for.

If your were painting the car, you would consider what the manufacture suggest. This is no different. Make sure you have the correct resparator. The paint can cause problems if inhaled. Not just the fumes but the paint itself.
where did you get the por 15 from? iwould get there advise,,i went thru all of this with my frame and drive componants and no one thought of calling the supplier after i suggested,,,,well it was done wrong,,,had to be done twice,,,,do youself a favor,,call the supplier or call mine-,,,,carl---------------------http://www.imperialrestoration.com/por_15_faq_POR-15_Rust-Preventive-Paint.asp
...........POR 15 is "probably" a moisture cure polyurethane....."probably" means you'd better find out exactly what it is before you start cutting it.........
....you could request an MSDS from POR 15 on their thinners, which will list the hazardous chemicals and an approximate percentage for each....not exact, beacuase it's a trade secret.....it will "probably" be xylol or toluene, or a mixture of both, a nasty solvent at best.....
How much you thin it is over to you, because it's your idea.....the POR 15 data sheet says it can be sprayed, but doesn't mention thinning the product for spray applications.......
So if I were you, I would contact POR 15 and ask them which model of sprayer or airless sprayer is suitable for their paint.....and then asked them if their product can be thinned.....I'm pretty certain they'll say "NO"...........
it can be thinned,,,like twin turbo calls it,,,,,''death in a can'' so dont inhale and use proper vent system,,,call dave stubbs,,,i gave you his web site,,,his 800 # is listed there ,,,,good luck
I received my shipment of POR-15 about a month ago and it came with a data sheet. I finally prepped my frame using their marine clean and metal ready product and I'm planning on painting my frame tonight. I just happened to read the data sheet last night.
I wasn't interested in spraying it so I only skimmed over that section but I can get the details for you when I get home from work in a couple of hours. I believe it says you can thin it down 5% and I forget what you use to do it.
WEll, it sounds like I need to order their thinner. I was hoping there was something generic that you guys use since I am sure their thinner is going to be overpriced. Thanks for the help.
There's a POR-15 dealer here that will load the paint into a rattle can if you're doing a smaller project.
The big thing to remind yourself when spraying POR-15 is that, whatever you've heard about proper ventilation and wearing the best mask you can afford is UNDERSTATED. YOU NOT NOT WANT THIS
S$&# IN YOUR LUNGS!!!
Even for small "rattle-can" projects get the mask on and get the box fan blowing.... I have a buddy who "rattle-canned" his control arms without a mask in a 500 square foot/ 20 foot ceiling garage with no mask. He said it hurt to breathe for the rest of the day....
By the way... you don't want it on your skin either unless you like the holstein cow look. This stuff sticks...... and stays.
I will second the comments on getting this stuff on your skin. I used a brass bristle brush. My hands were red for days. The irony, is that I was using gloves. I got it on my hands trying to remove the gloves.
By the way, I try to mention this often. I found another company that sells the same type of paint, I would say identical, as POR15. It's called Chassis Saver, and it's $25 a gallon cheaper. I found mine at the local Napa store. Not all NAPA's carry it. You can find it on the net. I have also posted the link somewhere else. It works the same, and produces a tough, flexible coating.
Be careful when spraying ANYTHING or you will experience Chemical pneumonia, This will ensure you that your frame will outlast you by several years. To anybody in the restoration hobby, Buy a good respirator, this is one area not to skimp on.

Well, here is the answer I said I would dig out. To quote the data sheet that came with the paint:
"You should use POR-15 Solvent for thinning. Some lacquer thinners will work, but many will not. Keep lacquer thinner handy for clean-up. Do not thin POR-15 more than 5%"
A - Even with the frame being mostly hidden from the sun, I
would top-coat the POR to be UV safe.
B - The stuff levels out very well. I would (and did) just brush it on.
In the end, a couple heavy coats of enamel will cover any imperfections in the POR15.
Brush on POR15 .. allow it to get tacky but not wet .. then dust the surface with any enamel. I like Krylon semi-flat black on silver POR. If black POR, then dust with white or silver to see better. You don't want to seal teh POR - just get some enamel stuck in the surface.
I have thinned (for brushing) some POR with lacquer thinner.
It seemed fine - but spraying may introduce other issues.

I just wait two days and it comes right off with some soap/water and wash cloth scrub. Thinner will take it off if you get to it within an hour or so.
I'm ready to buy a pint of Por-15 and want to spray it up into the fenders through the drain holes (not the Vette). How thick is this stuff? Would a chemical sprayer do it?
As far as the price of the official thinner...you can get it for $10 bucks a quart on ebay which doesn't seem too bad.
i went thru all of this with my new frame on the 73,when we did the rollin chassis,we por-15 the frame then gm chassis blach for the top coat,,,then i couldnt get the wand from z bart to spray the por in the frame rails,,so i sent the bare frame to z bart and they shot the rails inside,,,,,after building the chassis and dropping the body i took it back to a z bart dealer a year later and someone elsr re shot the inner frame rails....i fugured he would get what the first goof missed, and he did! here's a cheesy web site that shows before and after photos, caution !! cheezy geocities web site!!!!!!!!!------------http://www.geocities.com/carlclub2/
