I have a '68. If my turn signal lever won't lock in place when signaling for a left turn what part do I need? Is that the Cancelling Cam? or is there something else?
The switch has flexible "barbs" that hook onto the actuating arm. The cancelling cam is a separate piece that unlocks the "barbs" when it hits them.
You need the switch.
Order on for a 68 Bonneville with cornering lights. Other than the extra three wires for the cornering lights, it's a drop in replacement. I just clipped the extra wires (they use separate wires and connector from the semi-circular turn signal connector). It's hard to describe, but it really is a drop in. Contact Shee-Mar and have a $130 ready. Your other option is to learn how to injection mold plastic in your basement... The switch is really not service-friendly. I tried to tear mine apart and broke it into several non-repairable pieces.
The Bonneville switch is a good alternative, IMO. Search the forums for "shee-mar" or "Bonneville switch" and you'll find a thread about this.
On my '77 I thought I had a broken cancelling cam cause it wouldn't engage the turn signal without holding it down. Bought a new turn signal switch, then disasembled the steering column down to turn signal switch. What I found was the screw that connects the signal lever to the plastic switch was loose...put some loctite on it and tightened up, no problems to date with turn signal. Moral of the story, take it apart before you buy the part.
Years ago, these things, in particular the cancelling "barbs", were notorious for breaking off in especially cold weather. The quality of the plastic has gotten much better and I haven't actually broken one in a long time. (Of course I moved away from the frozen tundra, but that's another story.) This is all the more reason to get as new of a switch as you can... it will last much longer...
I will take apart the steering column and make sure there isn't something going on that is fixable, which there's probably not so I'll then be giving shee-mar a call. I read the turn signal thread posted above and it sounds good to me.
The signal lever not cancelling is a different problem than "won't lock in place".....you guys should read the post more carefully. The cancelling cam will not fix your problem. You most likely need a turn signal actuator plate. '69 - '79 are the same, not sure about '68. If if not too far gone you may be able to fix with some tiny screws and gorilla glue.
