Default 1971 transistor ignition

Being a first time owner, I'm a little confused about the T.I. My 71 LS5 does not have one. Was it an option? I have not seen it listed as one in any books I have. [IMG][/IMG]

Option K66 - Transistor Ignition was only offered as optional equipment in 1968 & 1969.
It was not offered as an option in 1971. It was only installed as part of the LT1, LS6, ZR1, or ZR2 engine options.

The following holds true for transistor ignition systems used on 1968 - 1972 Corvettes to the best of my knowledge.

For 1968, 1969, and very early 1970 Corvettes, the transistor igniton system was offered under RPO K-66 for all optional engines. Despite the fact that it is rarely mentioned in print, thereare several documented 1970 Corvettes that are knowwn to have been delivered with K-66. My guess is that it was only carried over to 1970 to deplete whatever inventory was currently on hand... After that, no more were sold.

For 1970 and 1971, the transistor ignition system was packaged with certian optional engines and included in the cost of those engines. These included the LT-1 in 1970 - 1971 and the LS-6 in 1971 as well as the the racing packages derived from those two engine options (ZR-1 and ZR-2).

Transistor ignition was not used at all on any 1972 Corvette including LT-1s... Which returned to a standard contact point distributor.
