Default Radiator Support (not good)..

Based on all I've read over the past year I've heard that the Radiator supports on the C3s can be a real rust trap. So I just took on the project this afternoon... Not really too bad... but thought I would share some pictures so that anyone that hasn't removed their radiator yet...may get the motivation to do so based on what I found.

By the way... I found where all the missing metal went...see last picture.

It took a little patience, but I found a near-perfect, used, blasted & painted support on E-Bay for $150. If you're in a hurry, they're about $300+ in the catalogs.

Me too (the ebay thing) mine was also <200 but I had to ship it twice, once from seller to Fla (mom's place), then from Fla to Montreal.

These things are a terrible design. Lift the hood after a wash, and you'll see the pool of water just sitting on the bottom rail. Then there's the lousy attachment arrangement of the foam insulation.

Mine was rotted at the bottom where coolant leaks and rain liked to pool. I wonder if coating with POR15 or Rust Bullet would increase suport life? Well i'm hoping for 20yrs at least on my new piece from Zip, if not i will get to try the rust-proof coating trick.

BTW how did the piston slap problem come out for u 80TexasC3? Find a cure? I'm interested in what u found.

Thanks for asking... speed shop found a defective Keith Black Flat Top. Unfortunatily, KB refused to do anything about it.

Turned out for the better as the shop installed SRP Forged Flat tops and fully floated the rods at no cost as a way to say sorry...

Nice and quite and runs great now.

I would think that coating with anything would help. POR15 is like duct tape, great stuff.

When I pulled mine out, I coated it with POR-15. Lets hope it lasts 15 years.

Well good for u. That must be one honest shop - most would have tried to blow that off as piston slap. Now u have great parts in the bottom end and can use a blower or NOx for more fun with little worry.

I wish that I had taken a picture of what came out of my car. The PO had cut both sides of the support about halfway up and kept only the top part in the car. The bottom had been "replaced" by buying a piece of channel steel from Home Depot and bolting it into holes drilled in the frame rails. This arrangement was pretty bad, but at least it didn't have to support much weight since the original radiator had been replaced by one that looked almost big enough to have come from my wife's Civic. The radiator was held in place by one drywall screw and some plastic cable ties. A cheap aftermarket oil cooler hung by the transmission cooling lines was somewhere nearby. Did I mention that the shroud was gone, too?
