I have a 73 454 and recently learned how to check the engine block number behind the water pump. Mine reads 13S41 and that's all.
Should the last digits of my VIN also be there or is this normal?
The engine numbers are sometimes pretty hard to see, especially if your stamp pad is dirty. I think they should be on that pad. Buy the NCRS restoration manual for your car and it will tell you more than you thought possible about it. Even if you don't restore your car that way it's still a great book.

Yes... the numbers should be there.
Use a small flashlight, and shine it sideways across the pad & see if the numbers are buried under paint (or other stuff).

The numbers are almost certainly there, but the pad could be gunked up. Clean it as best you can -- it's hard to reach sometimes depending upon what kind of contraptions you have in your way (AC, AIR, Bubba, etc).
