Default Power Window Problems

Hey Gang,

Trying to get my car ready to sell it. I have run into a interesting problem. My drivers side power window only tries to go up and my passenger side window will only go down. I had to cross the wires at the passenger motor to get it back up. I read there is a power window relay. Anyone know where I can find it and how hard is it to replace?

Also, has anyone replaced a power window spring with the regulator in the car? Mine fell out in two pieces a few months ago and I was hoping to avoid drilling out rivets since the window is all the way up.

Thank in advance for the help

Thetaxi

the relay is mounted under the console just above the shifter. the window switch pigtails run right to it so it is pretty easy to locate, lol! i don't know about yours, but my 78 has a circuit breaker instead of a fuse. don't know if that could also affect the window operation in the manner you describe (other than to shut the system down to keep from burning it up, then restore it when everything cools down). it may be possible that the switch may be bad. i would swap them out side to side to see if there is any difference first. obviously if there is the switch is bad. it could also be something as simple as having corrosion on the electrical contacts. it may be a bit of work, but i would take a door panel off and meter the motor to make sure you are getting the necessary amount of current to them. if i remember correctly the up function and the down function each draw a different amount of current so it should be easy to check it out. a good contact cleaner should help out.

I have what I think is the relay, although the same color wires from the switches do not run into it. So I plan on taking the console off tomorrow night. I have been trying a new switch, but the problem still occurs with the drivers window only going up and the passenger only going down. I used a test wire today and I could not jump the wires at the switch to get the passenger window back up. I had to do it at the motor. So I figure the wires must have an issue somewhere. But it's just weird how the driver's window will only try to go up and the passenger will only go down. Seems related, but time will tell.

I also have the circuit breaker. I figure since they still work, it must be okay. Oh the mysteries of the older cars.

I had the same problem with the passenger side... ended up being the wiring harness.

Yep. Borrowed a multi-meter from a friend yesterday. Had two loose connections. Glad to have fully functional windows again.
