Took my front wheels/tires in today to have new tires put on. Upsizing to 255/45/17 from 255/40/17 (40's are lost in the wheel-wells). TireRack shipped the tires to a "recommended" installer. The existing tires are almost new.
Me: I'd like to have these installed in place of these.
Tire Monkey (TM): Why? Those look almost new!?
Me: They're the wrong size for my car...too low-profile.
TM: But they fit, right?
Me: Yes, but can you please install these in place of those?
TM (with furrowed brow): OK. Come back in three hours.
3 hours later:
Me: Wow. They look great. Where's the old tires?
TM: In the garbage. Did you ask to have them saved?
Me: Why would you throw out two perfectly good tires?
TM: shrug, grunt
Me: So which one of you is going dumpster-diving?
TM2: I'll go...

I bet they were in someone's trunk, not a dumpster Hope you got 'em back
That's what I thought, initially. But I followed the guy to the dumpster and watched him dig. They were there. I would've given them some credit had they put them in the trunk of their car...but that's probably why they're installing tires for a living.
I wouldn't doubt they were on top and one of the tire monkeys were going to pick them out of the dumpster after work.
Nah...they were thrown in there randomly. One was on the bottom of a huge pile and the other was on the other side of the "dumpster pit". It was almost closing time and they weren't neatly stacked by the gate.
Sad part is these lunkheads thought I was wasting my money by putting on un-needed new tires, yet they throw out the tires they thought were OK...

No offense, but they probably thought you were some rich idiot without much care for money since you were switching out perfectly good tires. Since you didn't tell them that you wanted to keep them, it's not their job to put them aside for you.

No offense taken...but...you're half right. I am a (somewhat) rich idiot without much care for money, however, I shouldn't have to tell/ask them to save the tires. If they were into providing good customer service*, they would've/should've asked if I wanted them. At the time of write-up, I had a brief conversation with the service manager asking him if he knew anyone who wanted to purchase the existing tires "as I now have four of them"...
It is their job to save/dispose of customer's tires as the tires are in their care & control once I leave.
When I change out a client's equipment, I ALWAYS ask if they want to keep/sell me the old stuff. If the client isn't around to ask, I leave the old equipment piled up next to the new equipment.
*a fairy tale these days...

Around here they charge a tire disposal fee. Not sure a tire business is supposed to throw them in the dumpster.
That's the first thing I looked for on the invoice..."tire disposal fee" or "environmental fee". That wasn't there, so I assumed they were going to save them.
The dumpster was for tires only...no regular trash. They must have a service come around and pick up.
