Default 1968 Inside Door Handles

Does anyone know how far into the production run they used the smooth back on the inside door handle. The later design had ribs on the back of the handle and the early design was smooth on the back. I was told they change design for strength, early design were breaking off, AL.

...I just checked my 42K mile very original '68 Silver coupe and it has the "smooth backed" ones. VIN # is 14222, March 19th body build date.

Paul, my 68 has a build date of 4/29/68. I guess mine have been replaced? I have the webbed ones. I may look for the correct ones for my 68, Thanks AL.

I believe that there were actually 3 handles used in 68, and I don't know the "VIN split" where the changes were made.

Type 1 was fully smooth on the back.

Type 2 had 2 ribs on the back

Type 3 has 4 ribs on the back. This is the style used with 68 and up.

Hi

My 68 with a build date of 05OCT67 has full smooth handles ( if it is the back side where you grab with your hand, you mean ).
And yes, this handles are breaking, specially where they connect to the mechanisme. This little tungs break off easily.
