Default Removing gauge needles?

I assume they just pull straight off then push back on, but befores I start yanking and pulling and break something, is this correct?

Mark spots AND digital camera. I've never taken an interior this far apart so you better believe I'm being cautious.

Dang, those things are on tight. I just gave myself the equivalent to bamboo shoots under the finger nails.

If you twist them as you lift they come off very easy.

Pull up on the needle evenly & straight using small needle nose pliers or side cutters.

here is what I use to remove tachometer pointers with:

the end with the tiny notch goes underneath the needle, and you just pull straight up.

I made it, but i really can't take any credit for its design. I fashioned it after a GM-provided tool made 25 years ago that I used when I repaired tachs and speedos for a contracted warranty station.

here is how it's held:

this is what a tach/speedo pointer looks like from underneath (notice the brass counter weight):

and here is how the puller gets positioned under the pointer hub:

That's what I switched to, very skinny needle nose pliers.

Mike Mercury's tool looks perfect - when I get around to the speedometer/tach I may have to make something like that. Might also try the fork idea, sounds simple enough that it just might be a winner.

whatever you use, just be careful not to pry against the dial face. It can easily bend-dimple-scratch.

The shaft can still spin with the pointer removed, so be aware that the marks may not on the right spot.

Good tool. Pull straight, try not to wiggle. The shaft is very thin.
