Hello everyone,
Yesterday, I was doing 75 MPH on the frreway on my '74 coupe when my steering wheel shook and loud metallic slap in the front. I pulled over thinking I had a tire blowout, but my tires were all good. I continued driving for a few hundred feet with the metallic slap and I decided to pull over and had the toy flat-bedded back home. I soon found out that I lost 4 of 5 wheel studs on my front left wheel. I actually broke two studs off. One stud kept the wheel on and prevented what could have been a serious accident.
My question is should I replace the entire hub or should I just change the studs. Are the studs even available in the aftermarket? Where do I get them? Please advise. I need to get this baby back on the road.
1/2" studs have a .580" knurl - that's some major drilling
I bought M12 studs with a .480" (12.2mm) knurl, I drilled 15/32" (11.9mm) with a handheld drill the hole turned out to be 12mm so the threaded part fit through the hole and the knurl had to be pressed in - perfect fit
NAPA stock them and the fronts are not bad to do. If ARP makes them then that some added insurance. The new lug nuts I bought from the parts stores are a problem too, The threads roll the first time you remove them. I have to replace them every 4th - 5th time off. One rolled and locked the nut on and the impact gun sheared the stud off. It's a rear stud too, much more of a hassle to change with the backing plate on.
