I bought a pair of flowmaster 40 series mufflers tonight, they were apparently on a mustang before I bought them. I want to clean them up and weld them on this weekend, so I have a couple of questions.
First: How should I clean them? I want to at least clean the outsides, should I clean the insides and how would I go about doing that?
Second: How should I go about welding them in? What kind of welder should I use? (I have access to arc, flux core, and mig)
Third: Are these going to be too loud?
Looks like one has a hole in it. Wouldn't it be better to just get new ones, those may be burnt out on the inside.
Hehe...That just reminds me of the Monster Garage episode with Jesse James modifying his Figure Eight racer.
The rulebooks stated that he had to have mufflers on it.
He cut it open, and pulled out all the baffling/fiberglass/noise deadening material, welded it back on, and then stuck it underneath the car, and said, "It's not a muffler, it's a 'MUFFLER'!"
Maybe do a media blast on them to see if you can clean off the rust, if you have access to a large enough media blaster...That'll still give you the sandcast finish.
There are no holes... the dark spots are just dirt/grime. If I clean them up and cut off the extra pipe on either side then I think that they'll be good as new.... btw they're flowmaster 40s, there is no deadening material.
Get one of those foot and a half long stainless steel wire brushes (with the stiff steel bristles) from Home Depot and scrub off the grime. If there isn't any rust, I'd get a can of silver high temperature paint and paint them. They will look brand new...
