Default Two Questions...And Twisting Tires...HELP!

First, I just rebuilt the motor and now...I have a gas smell in my cabin.

I know I know, its a wonderful smell to you gearheads, but my gf doesn't seem to like her clothes smelling like exhaust and gas after a trip. Any thoughts on how to remedy this problem (tuning the carb perhaps?)?

Also, my steering is "loose" or "jerky" may be the words. Any time I hit a dip on the road or change lanes...any imperfection in the road...my tires seem to fall into them and pull the car right behind...is this the case of new shocks or a new steering box? If so, please recommend some good ones to replace them with.

Thanks
CaddyGuy

The gas smell...prob. running rich...how is you're timing set up? you may be able to run more advance, which should help lean it out

The tires...what kind of tires are you running? I've heard of people running into probs with bias ply tires. Really tight, racing style suspensions don't do well on uneven roads, they are made for smooth tracks. What kind of springs do you have front and back? Are you also running a performance shock?

Gosh, I feel like such a newb...oh wait I am ...

The tires are the Eagle RH Goodyear tires. The ones that were on it when I bought the vette two months ago. And I'm thinking the springs could be original from how they look. Is that my problem? If so, please please recommend some springs.

Also, sorta on the same note, when I first took this vette after ( few days after I bought it). I took a turn under an underpass and dropped it into second giving it a little too much gas...result, I did a 360. Now that was kinda cool, however, tonight...when I was pulling out from work (I haven't been in rain since that day btw)...I hit a large wet spot on the blacktop from sprinkler runoff...and boy did my front end take a twist!!!

Now I'm freakin out...seems like my car won't hardly drive straight dry...and apparently not even close when it's wet .

Very concerned, can't afford to total this car on a rainy day.

Thanks for everyone's input...

I am having the same problem right now on my '76, I just got a couple of months ago, just put some good tires on it and took it for a drive, and I could hardly keep it in my own lane, brought it back home and lifted the front, now I know why, all my a-arm bushings are worn out, on the drivers side lower a-arm there was one side with no bushing at all.. and the both lower ball joints are very loose. looks like a whole front end rebuild for me. might want to check the condition of your front end components.
