What's so special about this one?

Holy Crap Batman 2500 for that. I guess it must be something special because it says it is rare. Anyone know for sure if it is rare. It does not say for what car or what BB. Sounds fishy to me

Looks like a cowl induction air cleaner for a '67 Camaro Z/28 SMALL BLOCK. These things came out before the traditional cowl induction hood. It was an option on the 67 Z/28. Now with that said, I don't know if they were offered on the 67 SS 396 Camaro or not. It's definately a Camaro part though.

David,
Yes, I've seen the 1967 Z-28 cowl plenum air filter assemblies and they look very similar to the big block assembly shown here. Going rate on those is in the $2,000-$3,000 range last I checked although there may be a reproduction that has survaced in recent years... I just don't know.
There were cowl plenum air cleaners for the later 2x4 Z-28 induction systems as well as one for the Z-11 Impala 2x4 induction as well. I have seen a system similar in appearance to this one on a 1969 Chevelle, although I know it was not delivered that way. I'm also unaware of any car in the 1967-1970 time frame that used it as factory installed equipment.
My guess is that if it IS a GM system, it was sold over the parts counter as a service part... Would be a good question to ask this guy.
As far as the price... Tough to say, but if it is a GM piece, it may be worth what he's asking... Someone doing a retro look muscle car with period "go fast" parts.
I do know that if it IS a GM piece, I'd pay $2,000 for it... And I'm neither a sucker nor high on crack!
Regards,

that air cleaner design frist came from Smokey Yuinic for the 61 Impala 409, for the use in NASCAR. later on Yunick used it on 66 SS396 Chevelles agin for use in NASCAR. then I belive Chevy used it on 67-68 Z/28 Camaros.

Keith,
Sounds about right.
The early 1960's style cowl plenum air filter assembly was configured slightly different (mostly the air filter housing lid) than the later units used on the 1967 Z-28s, but the concept was pretty much the same.
It worked on the same principle as the later ZL-2 cowl induction hoods used on Camaros, Corvettes and Chevelles... Draw air from the high pressure area at the base of the windshield to feed the carburetor.

This assembly was carried over for early 1969 Z-28s as well. Later in the 1969 model year, a fiberglass cowl induction hood with a revised air cleaner assembly (designed to work with the new hood) replaced the less efficient cowl plenum air filter assembly. There are even a few steel hoods that were sold as service parts for 1969 Z-28s with the 2x4 induction... They are quite rare and expensive.
I sold a complete, late 1969 2x4 induction assembly (fiberglass hood, intake manifold, carbs, linkage, fuel lines, etc.) about four years ago to a gentleman restoring a 1969 Z-28... Probably should have held on to it, but my Camaro isn't a Z-28 and I doubt I would have used it even if I did own one as it's a lousy induction system for the streets (not to mention it was never a factory installed option).
[QUOTE=lil75vette]hmm... so... how about that special jar of air... i will sell it to ya cheap~![quote]
John,
I'll pass on the air, but if you have any interesting Chevrolet parts, let me know... I'm always looking for neat "stuff!"
