JD Corvette
I lunched the rear end on my '64 at the drags. They towed the car to their shop. I had a rear end built and they were to install it with BB caps. They put the SB U-bolts in. I had them redo it before accepting the car.
When they redid it and I came to get the car, half the exhaust and been left hanging with no bolts. I had to wait around for them to redo this (and at that they did a 1/2-*** job).
When I first towed the car in, I told them to also replace all the U-joints when things were apart. When I picked up the car, I specifically asked if they had been replaced and they said "Oh, the u-joints looked fine so we just lubed them up real good and reinstalled them."
Went back to the drags, and a u-joint snapped taking out the rear end cover, dog bone, half-shaft, wheel, etc., and actually had the halfshaft come into the car on a 3-gear shift!
This time I had the car towed to Automotive Expertise (Steve LuVisi of Overhaulin' fame). Another $3,000+ to repair things and Steve told me that the u-joints had not been serviced and were bone dry.
Contacted J&D (and yes I talked with Noel Park) and they said it wasn't their fault or responsibility because I shouldn't have been racing the car!
Yeah Right!Steer away from them like the plague!
p.s. I got the P/W set-up for less than the orginal quote from Carol's Automotive in Santa Clara!

Last week I e-mailed them a list of used parts for my 68 and 70 Vettes that I was interested in buying. The next day I received a return fax with prices of the stuff they had in inventory. I made a trip to their facility and they let me walk through their "warehouse," and sort through their bins of used parts. One of the employees accompanied me. I found some good stuff. At check out, one of the employees noticed that I had a part that was for a 71, not a 70. Good call. Saved me $70.
One consideration about using J and D. They tend to have parted out Southern California cars, which means that you have a better chance of getting a rust free part. I bought a 68 door latch that had no rust at all. This was a good find.
Parts Department: "F". Fax / Email requesting part information went unanswered. The dudes behind the counter NEVER look happy.
Attention to Detail: "F". After arriving home from getting the car tuned, I found a couple of old spark plugs and a wrench sitting on the fire wall.
Resto Estimate: "B". J&D was the highest priced of 4 shops visited. It exceeded the #2 estimate by 40%. However, J&D's estimate was complete and I would have been at ease letting them paint my car. It was the price that made me go to #2.
I agree with TODDALIN regarding Steve LuVisi's positive reputation. I spoke with him before taking my C3 in for paint at Shop #2. He said to get it painted first. After that, he can do everything else.
Identity of Shop #2? I'm withholding until my car's resto is complete. I will update The Forum at that time.
Good Luck,
James
.....I was very impressed with the whole operation.......they were very busy, but still took the time to look for and show me the parts I was after (bought my grills from them)....Frank also phoned me the next day about some other parts I was looking for.....so good follow up....
.....I can't comment on the quality of their restoration/mechanical work because I haven't had any work done by them, but for parts I would recommend them.....just be patient.....they're busy and there's a lot of stuff there they have to look through....
Tip: see if you can get in there to have a look yourself.....they had a '70 Vette there that was just prime for the picking...
