Default 1980 Paint tag "SPEC"

I have come across a rather strange paint tag on a blue 1980.....For the paint code it says "SPEC" Does anyone know anything about these cars? Any info would be great....The Corvette Black Book says that special colors were ordered and labeled as "SPEC"
Thanks

Pat,

The information in the Corvette Black Book is correct. Cars painted at St. Louis with a non-standard paint color (yes, they used to do this if you knew the correct procedure) were identified on the trim tag as "SPEC" just as you have described. Cars were also available from St. Louis delivered in primer and identified as "PRIM."

The original paint color for this car will be identified on the build order if you are lfortunate enough to have found a copy. My guess is that the color was actually an available GM color... This was pretty typical when a special color was ordered. However, it is possible that it could be a color from another manufacturer if the customer so desired.

I know this is true for the 1968-1972 Corvettes and I would guess that it was true for Corvettes up through the late 1970s.
