i bought a used cd player and instaled it in my 71... i posted about not having any bass, but i guess it'd more appropiate to say the rear speakers have a distorted sound....checked polarity and all checked out ok...hooked up a 200 watts amp/equalizer last night and got a louder distortion. b4 i try hooking the rear speakers to the front channel is it possible my rear channels could be blown

Sounds to me that the first thing to look at would be wiring phase. Make sure you have + to + and - to - all the way around.
You've tested them using two different amps it sounds like, the head unit and a separate amp. My guess would be it's the speakers. A reverse in polarity/phase will not usually produce distortion, it will just make for an.... interesting equalization curve.

I am no stereo expert, but having the +/- backwards would affect the phase and should not create distortion.
Best way to determine the problem may be by swapping parts. Start with a known good CD player or head unit (or anything that has audio outputs you can jack into the amp).
Maybe that's why it was sold used. First owner may have burnt the head so he got rid of it. I would take it back and get a new unit. You have already wasted more time than it is worth.
the reason i asked if the rear channels on the head unit might be bad is because i put in new 4x6 speakers in the dash and they sound fine... my next alternative is to hook the rear speakers to the front channels and see if the sound clears up...opinons pleez
