I installed a 2500 stall convertor in my 400 horse 383 and it is unbelievable the difference it made. it is a totaly new driving experience
I mainly did it so the car would idle in gear but the aceleration is unreal. it will break the rear tires loose if you nail it going 20 mph and this is with the stock 273 rear gears. it sure has a traction problem latley but is a blast to drive. best $300.00 I ever spent

Yep me too! I had my trans gone through long before I built the 383. And when the new motor was on the stand, I was tempted to get the stall convertor THEN but didn't
I figured the new motor would run great but it didn't. So I yanked the trans back and put in a B&M 2500 stall convertor and WOW what a difference. It's a different car.
I really need to do this too--How did it effect your highway rpm's?
did not effect them at all since you are above the stall speed on the highway, I was going to install 355 gears but no longer need to. the fun factor went way up.
If you have a lockup OD auto tranny it's even better if you install 3000+ I've had a 9.5 inch 3800 stall for nearly 5 years now. The smaller diameter is lighter so it's like running an aluminum flywheel.
What about shop costs to install it? How to chose a brand? I've been considering this mod for awhile and I've been confused by the choices... Thanks!
I went with a hughes convertor, I installed my own in about 3 hours but I have access to a lift. labor should not be more than 3 or 4 hours at whatever the shop rate is.
Since weight of the vehicle and HP of the engine effect the actual stall speed, do you guys find that the advertised Stall speed correct for the Vette?
I can't decide between a 2000 and a 2400.....
I think I read somewhere that the stall speed should be 500 rpms below peak torque.

I ask for a 3000 stall and even told them that i had a hot rodded 383. It was more like 3500 stall. Going down the freeway you could just blip the throttle and it will jump up to 3500 without going anyfaster. Now with a 427 it's gone up to 3800 rpm. So motor TQ makes a difference as to how much they slip
Stock stall speed for my '81 was 1800 rpm & I've changed that to a 2200rpm when I fitted an OD trans. Much better when leaving the line in a hurry, don't notice any difference in normal heavy traffic driving ie. it pulls away at low revs as it always did - but plant the throttle & the revs ramp up & it takes off much better than it used to

This is why I was thinking about a 2000 instead of a 2400.
However -it seems like the 2400's are built better and smaller so less rotating mass.
For a TH400 - I see B&M and TCI. Is that what everyone is running or are you going more high end?
Anyone know what the STR's for the B&M or TCI are? I can definitely see where different STR's can make a huge difference between units.

remenber the higher stall speed will sound a little funny since its slipping alot longer......kind of like those TV car movies where the automatics are always shifting constantly...some people even describe them as "mushy"....
