Go to one of your better autoparts stores. 3M makes some stuff called strip caulk. It's the same putty that you are referring to. It comes in a rectangular box about 12"X3". It doesn't harden like some of the household window glazing putties.
Eastwood sells some windshield polishing stuff if the newspaper and vinegar doesn't work. Incidently, I found a vinegar/ammonia mix diluted with distilled water makes for an awesome glass cleaning brew. Use it with a rubber squeegee and it's better than Windex or just about anything you can buy at the store for glass cleaning.
Micro fiber towels form Walmart will elminate the need for any type window cleaner. Just dampen one towel...wipe down the window, use the other to dry. No streaks ever. Reusable/washable, cost about 6 bucks for 6 wash cloth style towels.

Micro-fiber and water are super for cleaning all sorts of things. I use it on everything from camera lenses to LCD monitor screens.
thanks for all the info. i think i will try the micro fiber from wally world. i assume that rear window is not actually glass but some sort of high impact plastic and i was afraid it might scratch pretty easy. i have used some plastic polishing compound to super clean lenses but i thought that might cloud the rear window. thanks again to all. this is a very helpful site, glad i found it .
