the porsche 928s are cheap and the only thing unreliable is the clutch. Plus they have 5 liter v8s and have 4 seats.... this would be something to hold me over until i could get a vette that i would have the money to work on.
How old is that 928 that you're getting for $3500 ?? Buy it, you'll be selling it within a few months because you can't afford fixing it....
I am almost in the same situation as you are..so i can understand wanting to have a "cool" car to show off with your friends who probly have parents that will buy them a brand new c6 (always hated those kids).. I have a 77 that needs a lot of work before its driveable and dont have the money to even get it running..much less restore it.. Im a jr. in college and go to school from 8am till 12pm, work from 12:30 pm to 9:30 pm and get one day off a week. SOOO.. I bought a 98 chevy metro(equivalent to a golfcart in every aspect) for a few hundred.. and work on my vette with whatever time and money i have left after food and bills... My Advice? Park the Vette......Get a job........A CHEAP car.. (no one will remember what you drove in highschool when they see that fully restored Vette in 5 or 10 years) and save the rest of the 3500 for college!!!!(Buying kegs every weekend can get expensive)
lol man you guys are harsh. Yes I am thinking about college . Basically: I can't pay for the vette now unless someone wants to send me $10,000 to keep going. I've looked at some 928s that are like $3,500 and are in excellent cosmetic and mechanical shape, and I thought that it might be a good "cool" car to have before I get a job and can get another vette. Yeah nothing can replace a vette, but what else can I do?
I'd rather suffer with a Corvette than be comfortable without one. And if any of you don't understand that, you old guys need to give your Vettes to me because you obviously don't appreciate them enough Okay, to some it's just a car, even 'just' a great car, but I'm one of the sick ones... just a little obsessed. This is my 4th year of college, I bought the car between graduating high school and starting my first year. I don't regret it, you however might be able to tolerate an economy car.
Porsche 928: NO. Great cars, but when something goes wrong it always goes REALLY wrong. That's advice from experience, fortunately for me I was the one getting paid to fix it. Go Vette or get yourself a Lexus (Toyota engineers )

C3Curves, sounds like my last year working 9-5:30 and then going to school until 10. Plus about every other weekend working at a race (8am-??pm) Oh and I should mention that I finally broke down and bought myself a motorcycle for gasonline consumption reasons.
As a matter of fact, i have been contemplating that very idea.. I have enough money saved up to either get a Systemax II kit and everythign i need to rebuild my 350... or get a motorcycle and start saving again... Hard choice
I was going to be a little more diplomatic than some of the others above, but yes, sell car, spend $$ on college tuition, graduate, get job, buy another Corvette (already redone). Reported to Ft Sill in 1982 as a brand new 2LT w/$43.00 in my pocket, and now 23 years later...well, life has been very good to me, and I'm sure many of you can tell a similar story.
Ok, you youngsters are making my point one of you wants $10,000.00 GIVEN to you another wants us old guys to give you our vette because we don't appreciate them. Well my friend it took me a long time to get my first one (35 years). C3 curves is on the right track, priorities will make it happen faster. It's great to have things when you ae young, but WORK to get what you want don't have your hand out all the time looking for the easy way out, you will APPRECIATE everything more if you have to work for it. OLD GUY RANT IS OVER!!!!!!!
Exactly, get yourself a good inexpensive reliable car like a Honda civic/accord/Dodge neon. Then when you finish your schooling and have a job you can go out and buy anything you want.

I sold my big block '55 Chevy when I left for college . Even my immature mind could realize I could not afford it and it was not dependable. I even drove a Vega station wagon for a while , small consolation, at least it was a GT. Now that I have graduated I can buy myself and my kids decent cars.
Time to grow up and make some sacrifices. If you have to drive a POS for a while you will be more motivated to graduate. Otherwise you can limp along tied down to your expenses. I've seen it before, parents shell out a down payment for a new car for graduation and then saddle their kids with large car payments. A short sighted move in my book.
Sorry for the lecture, I tell my own kids the same thing. Good luck.
