My headlight assemblies are out of the car at the moment, so I'll hold one of them upside down in the opening to see how it looks and take a few pics. The body is off the car so I can get some underneath shots as well. A very interesting idea indeed.

I did some disassembly of the headlight assembly today but it got dark before I could take pics, but I will tomorrow. I did hold the passenger assembly upside-down in the driver's side opening and it looks just like the normal open position, only worse. I can understand the reasoning behind flipping the assemblies for racing and leaving the headlights fixed in the open position, but the lexan covered lights I have seen here on the forum have the bulbs recessed almost level with the rear opening. Flipping the assemblies will not produce that look. The pics will show what I mean.
Seriously, the flip the lid type approach is pretty nifty and all but the weight saving is just why most do the fabbed bucket thing, I like the look of the stock headlights but man do they weigh a ton
Oh yea, before anyone goes to a local fab shop with the posted template, take a good look at it, there are errors in it
one of the errors has been ironed out (the 8" measurement) but if you build them to that template they won't fit. There are some other measurements that are wrong, also on the ouboard flap there needs to be a notch on the side where the upper flap bends back to the header bar and the curved sides are too tall and too steep, they didnt' fit worth a damn on my 82, they weren't wide enough either. I have a mockup one and changed it so it's dead flush with the underside of the front clip, oh and on the later models the nose bar will interfere also, requiring notches on the front of the curved sidewalls.
As an fyi, those measurements where taken off of the ones for my car ..a 69........they DONT fit perfectly but the are modelled after the originals.
I believe there are difference's from the earlier years (68 to 72) and the later cars in the headlight areas.
I spoke with the guy who makes them a few nights ago (Frank @ F. Gregg Racing) to order mine. He indicated that the "cut-off" year is '74. '68 ~ '74 and '75 ~ '82 are different.
that's what I mean, look at the huge gaps between the buckets and the fiberglass...I don't want it like that.
yeah if you want no gaps you'll have to adjust the size/shape of the side part. Easy enough to do after you've test-fitted a few cardboard dummy ones. I'm painting my covers (see lvrpool32's car above) so you won't see those gaps at all when the Lexan is over it.
I made mockups from the drawings and left a little extra material here and there...and I got them to fit reasonably well after some trimming...but I had to notch some sections for the nose bar and header bar. Yours came out pretty good, mine are too narrow, the sides are visible through the opening the bucket is smaller in width than the door opening
