Had a leak on my gas tank only to find GM discontinued my tank, and none are being repro. Man!! I would feel a lot better if a new tank went back in. Any feedback from you guys and what you did (or would do) would help.

I would take it to a radiator shop that does tanks too, and have it fixed. It is a very common service.
Paul, Thanks for the reply. I just got back from radiator shop referred by two people here and they can't/won't do anything with it. I found a used tank 200 miles away for 400.00 but it seems like I could have one made for that-aluminum? still not sure which way to go!

How big is the leak and is the rest of the tank in bad shape? I have an 80 that has a hard plastic liner in it. In order to do a repair the liner would need to be burned out and than a repair made.
For a realy good job it will run 5-600.00. This includes repairs, sandblast and a baked on coating. If you buy a used tank than you still may have used problems later. http://www.bcrenu.com/paint.htm Is an outfit I worked with and there are others that may be closer to your location.
Good luck Dennis B
8DVETNUT - I just replaced the tank in my 76 since I wasn't sure where the gas smell was coming from. It turns out that it was the lines, rather than the tank. Since I had already bought the new tank, I'm going to go ahead and put it in. The one I took out has a bit of surface rust on the outside but the inside is spotless. I don't think I would be able to ship it since it's had fuel in it, but it's yours if you don't mind picking it up. I realize that this isn't exactly the tank for your car, and I'm not sure how different they are, but I'm glad to help out if I can. I'm up in Gainesville.
Thanks for the replies you guys!
Indy - It was a steady drip - about 3/4 gallon overnight. I discovered it only because I removed the spare tire for looks! What I'm thinking is for 600.00 I could maybe have a new tank made - not original parts but......
Gator - thanks for the offer - what a great vette guy!!
I am not a mechanic, probably obvious huh, just a guy who likes to work on his vette and is trying to keep Bubba away from it
but I would like to put something new back in for reliability ( then maybe I can concentrate on something else - cam, fans, paint hmmmm)
Page - what do you think of maybe an aluminum (plastic?) custom tank installed instead?
