Sorry for this dumb question but I have a pair of Pioneer speakers that have 2 brown wires coming out of the back: one is brown with no stripe and the other is brown with a black stripe. My question is which one is the positive and which is the negative?
Thanks,
Kurt
Anybody???
I'm in the garage and I'd like to hook these up but don't want to screw anything up.
Need some guidance please.
Kurt
If they are reversed, it won't hurt anything. They will be "Out of Phase". If you have them out of phase, the bass frequencies will be weak. In phase the bass is louder...
Thanks Big G,
I want to be sure they are "in phase" as you call it as I am crimping on male and female wire connectors on the ends of the wires and won't be able to reverse them without cutting off the connectors. I am running speaker wire to two extra (temporary) Pioneer speakers in the rear luggage area of my 68 coupe.
Not permanently attached, in case I want to remove for a stock appearance. (You know, the NCRS thing)
Need something loud for driving, while appearing stock (by removing) for judging.

Here's my home-built speaker enclosure built out of 3/4 inch MDF and covered with heavy vinyl. 2 Infinity 3-way 6x9's really rock. The tray is 1 piece, no hinges. Drops in the compartment ledge. Battery is relocated under the hood....NOT N.C.R.S. [IMG][/IMG]
The black wire is the ground and the colored wire is the plus. If you don't have any wires connected usually the wide spade is the plus and the narrow one is the negative. If both connectors are the same you can figure out phasing by using a small AA or AAA battery. Connect the negative side of the battery to one post on the speaker and then touch the plus side of the battery momentarily to the other post. If you have the phasing right the speaker cone will move forward. If you have the wires reversed the speaker cone will pull in. Once you have the speakers set up the easiest way to see if they are in phase is to sit in the middle of the two speakers and listen to a voice recording. If the speakers are in phase the voice will be directly centered in front of you. If the speakers are out of phase the voice will sound directionless.
Vettfxr,
Great tip on how to check the speaker phase with the battery.
By the way, nice website. I just spent the last 30 minutes looking around your website and your insulation project plus stereo upgrade. Both your car and website are very nicely done.
Thanks again for the help.

Thanks Kurt. There are also a lot of CDs around that you can use to set up a stereo. You can do a google for "test CDs" and see quite a few of them. I'm embarasssed by my website. It's been so long since I updated it I think it's getting cobwebs. I was thinking of doing it but there's those cracks that have to be fiberglassed and repainted and some touch up under the hood and..................well you get the picture. Thanks again for the compliment.
