Default smog removal

removing all the smog stuff off the '72 I just bought. got the pump off, am having trouble getting the nuts off the manifolds, as they are almost "rounding off" as i try to loosen them. any ideas? i would prefer not to cut the tubes so that I have them for when i eventually sell it.

Try soaking them with PB Blaster, it works very good for me.

After soaking with soem PB Blaster, try banging on a slightly smaller metric socket, it may give you enough bite to get it off.

Use a torch and PB Blaster along with a vise grip. Back and forth should get them off. Don't clamp down too tight as the nuts are hollow.

This is a little off topic but something I remembered from back in my smog removal attempt days. I had problems removing the bolts that were used to plug the holes for the smog tubes. Naturally the threads got boogered and I wanted to tap them to straighten them out. I found that they were not NPT threads but SPT. NPT threads are tapered pipe threads whereas SPT are straight pipe threads of the type you see on lamps. It took a while to find the appropriate tap but I eventually got the threads straightened out and plugged. After that I ran the stock manifolds until I had other problems with them and then replaced them with pre-smog rams horns. Later I ditched all that for a set of headers and haven't looked back since. Just a little trivia for ya.

My first new car was a 67 Camaro. I also ditched the smog equpt but if I remember correctly I went to a plumbing supply store and bought brass plugs for my exhaust manifold....they fit like a champ...no problems.

From other peoples advice and comment on this same topic, the common answer was using PB blaster and letting it soak for DAYS.
