Default Crate vs. Rebuilt -- let's get our terms straight!

The term "crate" motor has been misused a lot lately. So here goes:

Crate motor: An engine that is 100% new -- in the crate. GM Performance Parts sells crate engines. Edelbrock does too...but even they start with a GMPP block.

Remanufactured motor: An engine that is overhauled with a significant amount of new parts.

Rebuilt motor: An engine with used parts that are (hopefully) still within spec. Broken and worn parts are replaced.

If one was to get the crate 350ci short block and wanted 350-400 hp on low octane what would you recommendations be?

Nope. Don't agree.

We have to first fix the usage of the term 'matching numbers'

Don't mess around playing jigsaw puzzle. Buy a ZZ4 -- which is a crate engine.

Because you live in Quebec, you are only allowed to use the term "matching numbers" in French.

The ZZ4 requires premium fuel.

Default Matching numbers

Wouldn't matching numbers all be the same. Like 11111111, or 2222222, or 3333333

Can't have it all. I imagine that much HP using 87 octane would be a challenge to achieve without EFI, knock sensor, engine management system...and all that.

Pumping premium into the tank is a much cheaper alternative!

Matching numbers means either all of the restamps look good or that the previous owner told the current owner that the numbers match (but nobody has admitted that they did check them and they didn't match) Does that make any sense?

What is "significant amount of new parts" How many and what types?
Sounds like a grey area to me.
And it sounds like some 'rebuilt' motors begin as a rebuild but end as a 'remanufactured' or 'crate' engine.

So at what point does the rebuilt motor become a remanufactured motor?

If I use all new grey bolts, nuts and washers does that count as a significant amount of new parts? And if they all have a 1 stamped on them does it count as matching numbers?

Sorry I had to ask.

Many years ago when we would see an old oil burning decrepit piece of junk car going down the road we would exclaim "Look at that old piece of sh#t crate"! I wonder now if they were powered by "CRATE" engines.
