If the VIN number has the L then it was a L48 car. And the Previous Owner (PO) put the L82 emblem on the hood. If the VIN has the L, but the block can be determined to be a L82, then it is not the original motor, but could be a L82, and the emblem would then be correct.

The question is as to where you could buy an L-82 for say the 79 I have if I ever wanted to outright replace it. That would be good for originality I think.

You certainly could find a 79 L82 motor ... then have the pad
restamped with your VIN # - but it will never be worth the
investment. True cloning is only worthwhile on very rare models.

L48 vs L82 ? Most times putting a true dual exhaust is enough
to make the L48 overpower the L82. We're only talking about 30HP.
If you want more performance from either, heads-cam-intake-and headers
is the best bang for the buck.

I have a 79 L-82 minus intake/carb/ignition sitting on the floor next to all the other bone yard blocks.

I should have never given away all the top end parts and kept it complete

I'm gonna buy myself an early X-mas present I think and get a pair of Hedman headers, with the true dual undercar chambered from Mid America, no mufflers Wonder how much that will boost my HP...hmm

I've got the complete intake, carb, breather, tubing, etc. but minus the HEI. If interested, email me at marshrat99@yahoo.com. When I pulled the engine, it had only 67K miles and just replaced it to get more HP. I'll keep the block though since I'll be building a huffer motor probably within the next couple of years.
