Default Gauge clusters

What is the difference between a '77 and a '78-'82 center gauge cluster bezel? The parts suppliers have different part numbers, but use the same picture. I have a '78 (I think) bezel that is a bit beat up that I was going to use for my custom cluster, and as far as I can tell it looks the same as my '77 bezel.

I'd say just unbolt the old cluster and see if the 78 will work. Taking out the cluster on my 79 is really easy and I wouldn't think that they would be much different. Possibly the problem might be in the guage sizes.

The 77 cluster has sides or "wings" that extend to the 68-77 dash. The dash was redone for 78 & the 78- cluster does not have the sides. To use the late cluster it's just a matter of cutting off the sides from the 77 & using them. The 77 cluster would then fit 78-.
Changed to the 80 cluster awhile back replacing the clock w/ the later oil temp. gauge though it fit in the 77 cluster.

Ganey, thanks for the info...I'm customizing the bezel (getting rid of the fake aircraft cluster panelling and installing Autometer Phantoms), so I can probably just fab up the "wings" out of sheet plastic.
