When I go to strip the vette down, I'm betting the spiderwebbing has gone through the gelcoat and it'll have to come off too. Is it absolutely necessary to have a new coat of gelcoat on there before I paint? I believe I've heard that it isn't necessary, but I wanted to double check.
Corvettes are NOT gelcoated... if you have spider webbing it is probably just in the paint. Corvette fiberglass does stress crack sometimes, and has to repaired by grinding a "V" thru the stress crack and far enough back so as to completely remove the crack ( usually 1/4 to 1/2 inch on each side ). The grind is then reglassed with fiberglass mat and resin.
Well, whatever that green coating is over the fiberglass, gelcoat or not, if it's cracked it has to come off. unless you want the cracks back. That's the message I've gotten so far. My paint is terribly spiderwebbed and the cracks go righ thru the gelcoat to the glass. There are a few new products out there to coat the glass with before priming and painting. I'm using Duraglass and USC icing.
