Air Cleaner fitment...
According to Edelbrock, the below-pictured air cleaner is 3" and will not fit under a stock '74 C3 hood.
However, here is a pic of the air cleaner under the (stock?) hood of a '79. I believe this car belongs to a forum member.
So...how does the air cleaner fit under the hood of a '79 and not a '74?

That's a pretty cool air cleaner. Not sure why it would fit a '79 and not a '74. Maybe the '79 has an L-82 hood or something? That motor looks like a late model LT1 with a standard distributor. Pretty neat!

Could be. How much taller is an L-82 hood than stock? I didn't know there was a difference (other than the "L-82" badging).

I'm not sure if the '74 had any kind of hood scoop. The L82 has some, maybe 1-2 inches?

Several months ago, I put a new K&N filter on my 63. I had hood clearance problems as well (I needed a filter that was under 2.5 inches thick). I taped a tire guage under the hood and found the area that had the tightest fit (front edge). I then reworked the flange so that I could tilt the filter slightly down in the front, and got the clearance needed.
I have the original (twin snorkel) air cleaner should I want to go back to stock.

if im not mistaken it hits the hood on that car
if you look at the front of the cleaner you can see where it has been rubbing on the hood

Hard to tell. Could be an anomoly in the pic. I've look at other pics and the air cleaner seems fine.
Here's one of the hood closed:
