Default Trans Help, Please

Well, I gave in and finally sold my G-Force 5 speed and assorted companion hardwear (bellhousing, clutch etc).
Now I'm looking for the best automatic for my needs to put in Ol' "Love Is Blue".
Can you all make suggestions who to check out for a STRONG
4 speed/5 speed automatic? The space inside the tube frame is built to clear a manual transmission, so the hugh 80LE trans is out, so I've been told.
Because of the high horspower of my blown BB,( around 700-800) I will need something strong enough to take the abuse I tend to give my 3000# car. Remember, this is a STREET car, not a 1/4 mile star, so it's got to be streetable and be able to hold up on long drives like the Hot Rod Power Tour.
Who is the best trans people to talk to and buy from in your opinion?
Are there any supporters of Corvette Forum on board or do any offer discounts to us?
Thanks for your time in advance.
I know some of my friends are upset with me going from manual to auto, but breakage was getting to be prohibative on my limited budget.
Right or wrong decision, it's a done deal now so I'll have to live with it. Money has changed hands and it's gone. Thk. Glenn

4l80e, it really isn't that much bigger than a 4l60, Monty managed to put one in his 82 without too much work to the tunnel

Thanks, but I have a custom built tube space frame running down the center of the chassis. It was only big enough to clear a Richmond type 5 speed. That's the problem, but I'll look into the diminsions. Glenn

Hey - I think a Lenco might fit in...they can certainly handle the power, and have street/strip versions.

Default Just a thought...

What about a powerglide?
They can be built to handle some pretty hefty horsepower.

Boy I knew I was going to get flammed over this one. Yes, I AM getting old, and more to the point, I'm beginning to really FEEL the age. Yeah, "BLUE" is going automatic after almost 40 years of rowing it's own. I felt a twing of pain when I finally made the deal and watched the parts be driven off to Ft. Lauderdale.
As for a LENCO. No thanks. The G-Force was tough enough on the street. I had checked into a Keslier 5 or 6 speed, but finally my wife nagged me into an automatic.
I've just this afternoon put a deposit on a JW (Johnnie Winters out of Fl.) Turbo 400 trans, built to the max. They say it's good to close to 900 HP, so I should be OK. I also put a deposit on a new (larger) solid lifter Comp Cam to adjust for the automatic. Fun Fun Fun. I LOVE Christmas time!!

Oh no an automatic. This is a Vette not a Lincoln. I would not trade the stick for anything.

Hopefully, you're not going automatic just so you can hold your cell phone/crackberry...

I was just thinking how much fun a 6 speed would be the day I read your post. No fun breaking parts but the going through the gears is cool...........for a while. It would be nice to have both. Shifting an auto is not even close to the same experience to me.

I've LOVED shifting all thease years, and I too, looked at a 6 speed (Keslier TKO), but finally went to the Turbo 400. Got to tell you, I'm awfully afraid I'm going to miss the gears and have less performance in the end to boot.
Can anyone out here give me some good stories of an auto behind a monster motor? Sure could use a lift right now. Thanks Glenn

i don't know if i want to follow "Blue" and film it on the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2006 now that u've got an automatic in it. well i guess i can overlook it seeing that mines an auto also. on the bright side you'll be able to film easier as u cruise on down the road.

I doubt if performance will be degraded in any seat-of-the-pants feel.

Maybe to make it fun, you can rig one of those steering wheel paddle shifters. I've seen some pretty sharp looking billet ones on the market now. Your car has tons of stuff more complex than that. (Or you could trade you 400 for one of those high tech fully automated Ferrari computer shifter "automatic" manual transmissions). I want someone here to get one of those.
