Default core value?

What would a fair price be for the stock running (77,000 miles) motor out of my 1981 be? I am doing a swap and I just curious what I could sell it for. THANKS!

$300-$500 sounds reasonable.

I think you would be lucky to get $300 out of it. 1 pc seal, 2 bolt main, average heads. It's just a core or something for an old truck.

If the engine is original and you have somewhere to put it I'd recommend hanging on to it. The resale value of the car will be higher if you have the original motor available, even out of the car. If it's not the original motor then the previous estimates of its value sound right.

As a core it's worth probably 1/10 of the value that your car will decrease by.

Core value $300
decreased value of car $3000.
regret it forever= priceless.

For an 81? It's not a chrome bumper big block or anything. If he's replacing it with something much better, which I'm sure he is, that car would be worth more with the new engine.
