Is there another way to get the inside door handle off without using a special tool? What I want to do is take the outer window seal off and the outside door handle to start prepping for paint. Thanks in advance. Mongoose
Ok, I am confused so you get more info than you need. The inside door pull has three phillips screws reached from the bottom holding it on. The inside door release handle has one bolt holding it to the door frame. Pull the bolt out and you can slip the handle out of the door. The outside doorhandle has two nuts holding it to the doorframe. Those nuts are one of the worst jobs on the car. An open end wrench and small fingers can take them out without further dismantling. I pulled the screws on the back edge of the door from the door lock mechanism and dropped it down so I had access to those handle nuts. This is true for a 78 and an 82. Earlier C-3's I am not so sure about.

The only handle that I know of that has a special tool is the window crank. I have been able to remove it using a very thin screwdriver to pop out the C-ring. I just push a little on each end of the C and work it (slide it) out parallel to the plane of the door. To replace, put the C-ring in place on the handle and just push it back on the shaft.
The tool for the window crank and the lock **** makes the job alot easier and only cost a few bucks.
I made my own tool years ago to work on my Monte Carlo (71) window cranks, and it works great on the vettes too.
Steal a regular fork from the kitchen (old one, so no one will notice) and bend back 3 of the tongs, leaving one. Straighten it a bit and bend the very tip up about .125". Works great for pulling the c-rings. And, as long as no one catches you, it's cheap. Better yet, get one from a friends house
Ok, those all answered my questions! Serves me righ for trying to type a question at 1am in the morning here. I especially like the fork idea for the C-ring! We have lots of forks but no spoons around here. I think the kids keep tossing them, haha. THANKS
i cant believe some of you guys. the thing cost 3 dollars!and your driving a vette! hell i love spending money on my car and im layed off!unbelievable,no wonder i cant sell one of my trip meter repair tools to you guys!!!!!!!!!!!
It's that "necessity is the mother of invention" thing. I made it about 30 years ago when I was in HS, and I didn't have a Vette or the money!! If something works and it's free, why spend the money?
If I ever need my trip meter fixed, I'll look you up! I have a lot of friends in the same boat you are. All their jobs went South of the border....

I made my own clip removal tool with a small jeweler style screwdriver. I bent the tip at a 90 degree angle about 1/8 inch long. I bought the clip removal tool from the parts store, but had a hard time using it. Here is a comparison of the two tools.
