every time vette fest rolls around i go over my carpet in spots w/ the oxblood dye in the spray can same dye for panel parts. just spray on and i use a old scrubrush to work dye into carpet mat.works nice on those faded areas to bring it back
I used the dye on the rear of my 79 & replaced the front 2 years ago. Still looks good and you can't tell the rear fron the new front carpet.
I think Napa sells it in different colors. If your carpet in in good shape and its a driver not a trailer queen then I would spray it. What do you have to loose $5 or $10 on the dye.
Try SEM products - haven't used their product for carpet but have used their Color Coat & Vinyl Prep products for restoring or changing color of any plastic or vinyl. http://www.semproducts.com Try your local auto paint supplier, most of them carry SEM.
Not to steal this thread but the carpet in my DD is in good shape but it's the wrong color - I hate that tan color... would like to have a black carpet but the new carpet is $240
Wouldn't mind taking it out and dye it - will that dye hold up ok ??? I thought about the stuff that you use for hair "just for men"

If you dye your carpet, and it gets lots of wear, you will have to renew it every year or so.......if not much wear, it lasts, and lasts, and lasts.....good news though, from my experience, darker colors over light work better than vice versa, and black covers best and lasts longest.

Is that dye really dye or just like spray paint ? I got some "carpet color" in a spray can that I used on two floor mats a few years ago... didn't hold up at all, came off like dust....
I was wondering if there's anything better, like dye that you use for clothes... all of those products require hot water (best to use in a washer), I just can't fit the carpet in my washer ... as a sidenote: my wife would likely kill me
does that carpet dye actually penetrate the material and "dye" it vs just sitting on top like spray can paint ??
Maybe I should just live with the tan carpet or spent the $$ for a nice new black one ???
What a bunch of loons! Spray paint?? You guys made me laugh!! Thanks!
There are specific dyes for carpet that professional carpet cleaners use. Do some searches on the net and you will be able to find a distributor. As long as it is nylon, you should be ok with dyeing it. First you have to clean it with water extraction and neutralize any possible protector on the carpet. Any chemicals must be removed from the carpet. You will have to remove the carpet from the car to do it correctly. The dye typically comes in a powder form and is to be mixed with water before using it. Have fun and don't use it on your wife's hair!!

You're welcome I only 'tested' the $3.95 spray paint style carpet color on floormats, expecting the result to be horrible....
As I said I wouldn't mind taking the carpet out to dye it - I just don't want to spend $240 on a new carpet when mine is in in decent shape and does not need to be replaced...
I agree that removing it and getting all chemicals off first is the way to do it right, just need to find a product that can be used with cold water or no water (just like the hair stuff) ... ever got some drops of that hair dye on your carpet or on your shirt ? That seems to be pretty good stuff, the bad part is that you'll need 20 packages for an entire carpet

Use the interior dye (available from Ecklers, Corvette America, etc). This works well, and is made to use on carpets, seats, cloth, etc. It's NOT an enamel like regular spray paint.
