Default Stereo System

My '82 still has the original cassette AM/FM Delco and really needs replaced.

I went to CarToys today to see about a new system. All I was looking for was a CD/AM/FM and 4 speakers, nothing fancy.

The salesman totaled up how much it would be to install and I almost fainted....$680!!!

I said I'd get back with him.

Does that price seem reasonable?

I can't see myself paying that kind of money for a "bare-bones" setup.

The componets were made by Eclispe btw.

Today I purchased a Sony AM/FM/CD/MP-3 radio plus 2 6x9 Sony Explode speakers for 253.00 all from a local stereo/appliance store. I need to pick up 2 4x6 speakers to complete. About 60.00 I will do the install since its not that hard..Eclipse is a good brand but shop around some more.

Those places ain't cheap. Here's what I did:

Purchased a pair of 4x6 Pioneer speakers at Wally World. About 40 bucks.
Purchased a new Blaupunkt head unit on ebay. About 100 bucks.
Purchased some new Infinity component speakers on ebay. About 100 bucks. Perhaps less. (The speakers shown are Pioneer units. I replaced them for stupid reasons.)

Be aware that most 6x9 speakers will not fit -- they're too deep. I made custom panels for my rear speakers -- which are 6½" round component speakers -- out of 1/4" aircraft plywood. I used the original plastic panels as templates. Easy stuff.

I'd recommend a stereo with a black bezel, not silver, and not too many flashing lights. Then it'll look "right" in the '82.

Thats way too much. Those places are rip offs. I put a 50watt x 4 pioneer indash am/fm/cd player w/two matching 6.5 pioneer speakers in the rear & two in the front dash. The hole setup cost $330.

Installing a car stereo is cake anyone can do it. If you never installed one before ask a buddy who has. Takes about 2 hours. One hour to install & the other hour to drink beer & listen to your new stereo.

Oh if you like I have a almost new Awia AM/FM/CD (indash) paid $160. and a set of pioneer 6.5 speakers paid $100 for, you can have both $150. Can't help myself buy stuff I don't need because its on sale.
Send me a PM if interested.

Check crutchfield.com I would avoid any local shops. Most shops want too much money....the customer support from crutchfield is top notch!

page62,
Nice installation. Looks like it came that way from the factory. Nice job, and you still have the rear storage area available for use.
