This winter I want to take stuff of my car, media blast it, and paint it before I put it back on. I've never done anything like this, so I was wondering about this "powder-coat paint" stuff that you can get in various colors from midamerica and such. Looks decent... anyone have an opinion? I know nothing, so educate me.
i have never done the powdercoating myself but have had
quite a few pieces done. in particular a set of wheels on
my 69 dodge coronet 440 that i recenly sold.
these wheels were on the car for 10 years and 10k+ miles
and looked like they day i put them on.
they held up really well.
on another note if its in a place that gets 300+ degrees of heat
dont powdercoat i was told that it wont hold up under these conditions.
what's powdercoat paint?? is it paint or powder, if it's powder you need an oven to cure it and a powdercoating gun to actually charge and spray the powder. Powdercoating isn't that hard as long as you properly blast & clean the items you're coating, use nitrile gloces so you don't get fingerprints on the bare metal and large pieces are better preheated, this also helps the powder to stick so it won't fall off as easily when you'rre handling the part/transferring it into the oven.
Ok so I'm not actually looking to powdercoat, there is paint from midamerica that supposedly gives a powdercoat look/effect. That's what I was wondering about. Is just bare POR15 ok too on suspension/undercarriage stuff?
powdercoat is a great option if you never plan on changing the color of the item exer again. it can be a real PITA if you try to take it off. As for heat, i had my exhaust manifolds powdercoated with high temp and it didnt really work out too well.. the rest of the stuff i had done came out great and still looks like new.
